Using Oriental
Medicine For Your Health Care
Michele Arnold
& Traci Dean, both Licensed Acupuncturists, practice the art of Oriental
Medicine at Total Health Acupuncture Center in Poway. Acupuncture
is a holistic medicine that has been used for over 2500 years. In fact,
it is used by one quarter of the world's population today. Many people
have heard of the effectiveness of Acupuncture for pain management, but
they don't know the wide range of ailments that can benefit from Oriental
Medicine. Oriental Medicine is a comprehensive system that takes the "Whole
Body" approach to healthcare. At Total Health Acupuncture, we believe
that your lifestyle, diet, environment, physique, spirit, and emotions
all play an important part in your overall well-being. To help your body
restore itself from disharmony and disease, the practitioner of Oriental
Medicine may use a variety of treatment methods. The most well known therapy
is Acupuncture. Oriental Medicine also includes the use of Herbal Formulas
(both Chinese and Western), and moxibustion, which is a warming herbal
formula used to stimulate acupuncture points. Another method is cupping
- a small jar or cup with a smooth and rounded mouth used to create a
partial vacuum over the skin. This causes the blood to circulate and pulls
it towards the surface of the body, which clears any stagnation of energy
that has occurred deep in the muscles. Other methods of Oriental Medicine
used are nutritional counseling, oriental massage, acupressure, exercise,
meditation & lifestyle counseling.

What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture
is based on an ancient concept dating over 2,500 years old. Its core belief
is that the body is made up of channels (called "meridians") through which
vital energy (chi) flows. When the chi flows smoothly and harmoniously
there is no disease or pain. When it is stagnated or disrupted, pain,
fatigue, or illness will result. Stimulating points along the meridians
will help release blocked energy and restore the balance between areas
of excess energy and those of deficient energy.

How
Does Acupuncture Work?
Thin, hair-like,
sterile, disposable needles are inserted into specific acupuncture points
and left in for approximately 20 minutes, while the rebalancing occurs.
Research has also shown that the body responds to acupuncture by releasing
endorphins (neurotransmitters that stop pain), increasing blood cell counts,
and heightening the immune system. Further, the blocked energies are restored
to balance and better health returns.
