Acupuncture and Pain
Painful physical conditions
that last several months or longer are given the term “chronic pain”.
Chronic pain refers to conditions like back, neck and shoulder pain; lower
back pain; chronic fatigue syndrome; arthritis; headaches; and temporomandibular
joint syndrome (TMJ). Acupuncture is a natural, less invasive method of
healthcare and can be used instead of, or in conjunction with, prescription
and over the counter medications.
A study published
in the journal Pain1 has shown that many specialists either employ acupuncture
in their own practice or refer patients to an acupuncture practitioner,
and that they feel the practice of acupuncture is "legitimate." The results
of a study published in the Clinical Journal of Pain2 provide proof that
acupuncture is a safe and effective procedure for low-back pain. Acupuncture
can offer positive results without the negative side-effects that can
accompany more traditional pain remedies. Several
studies have shown that acupuncture can successfully treat frozen shoulder.
Many pain patients concur that, when using acupuncture on a consistent
basis for treatment of their pain, the treatment has been helpful in easing
or eliminating their condition.
These are just a few
examples of the conditions that acupuncture can help heal. For more information
on other conditions, please contact Michele and Traci at 858.613.0792.

Vitamin Update - Vitamin
C and Vitamin E; Selenium and Cancer
VITAMINS C AND E.
A recent study demonstrated mutually beneficial effects when Vitamin C
and Vitamin E were taken together daily, over a 12 month period, as compared
to taking one or the other alone. Also, the heart muscle seems to benefit
when Vitamin E intake is greater than 800 IUs per day. Anything less than
800 IUs per day did not show cardiac benefits. Similarly, Vitamin C at
1,000 mg per day was shown to enhance both the heart muscle and the immune
system.

SELENIUM AND CANCER.
Cancer researchers conducted a study that assessed the benefits of selenium,
which is frequently touted as a cancer preventative. One group of participants
in the study was given selenium as part of their daily regimen and the
other group was given a placebo. Neither group knew whether they were
taking the selenium or the placebo. The study concluded that the group
taking selenium had a reduced incidence of cancer. Of those individuals
who developed the cancer and were taking the selenium, they seemed to
have a better recovery rate.
